The FWBO was founded by an English Buddhist, Sangharakshita who spent
many years studying Buddhism in India, before returning to the West.
The FWBO is a network of communities, meditation centers and other institutions
dedicated to bringing the spirit of Buddhism to the West.

The forms
in which Buddhist truths are expressed always adapt according to circumstances.
But the essence of Buddhism transcends culture and conditions.
Now that Buddhism has come to the West, westerners are faced with the
task of creating new and viable Buddhist traditions for the modern
world. Over the last thirty years the FWBO has grown to be one of the largest
Buddhist movements in the West, with canter's and activities in many
cities around the world.
The FWBO is an international Buddhist Movement
with centers in Europe, India, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. It was
founded in 1967 by the Venerable Sangharakshita, an Englishman with twenty
years of experience as a Buddhist monk and scholar in India.
The FWBO in New York City
holds regular introductory meetings as well as a weekly group that
meditate and study together.
